The Toronto Fringe Festivalis about to take over the city with new and interesting productions popping up around the city between Wednesday July 1st and Sunday July 12th. Experience Toronto had the chance to sit down with Toronto actor Marcello Cabezas and get the scoop on his first penned show which will make it's debut at Fringe 2009: Chooch, Bummy Bum and Inguele. Here's what he had to say about Fringe, the production, sharing the stage with his mom and his fave spots around the city...
ETO: What are your thoughts on Toronto's Fringe Festival? Marcello Cabezas: I think it's pretty great that anything goes. I mean, you can do a show with your mother on stage and that is ok. We are not getting married though.
ETO: What inspired Chooch, Bummy Bum and Inguele? Marcello Cabezas: Mom and I, we love each other, but we need some context on how to make our relationship better. The idea is to use the show to create a treaty we can live by. And who knows who we will get to play her.
ETO: What does your Mother think about your first penned show? Marcello Cabezas: She loves it. She loves that it's about her. She loves that we are doing it together!
ETO: Is it true she is making an appearance on stage? Marcello Cabezas: Yes she really is. For real. Has that ever happened in Toronto?
ETO: Currently your team is on a worldwide search for an actor, male or female, who they deem worthy of playing your mother. Any interesting names pop up as of yet? Marcello Cabezas: Well Liz Taylor, Cher were my two faves to date. But we are also looking into guys.
ETO: Tell us about the getting this production up and going? Marcello Cabezas: Fringe is tough. Less money. More favors. And now Mom telling you what is right and wrong.
ETO: You currently live here in Toronto. What are a few of your fave spots throughout the city? Marcello Cabezas: Love Reggies, amazing salads, open 24 hrs a day on King West. Nyood and Kultura, amazing food sharing concept, and The Spoke Club is where I hang my hat for a patio drink with friends. So many amazing places in this city.
ETO: What is the greatest threat to theatre in Toronto? Marcello Cabezas: We need to make theatre more on people's every day deferred entertainment activities. Amazing, amazing stuff out there.
ETO: What is truly "great" about theatre in Toronto? Marcello Cabezas: Variety. So many amazing artists to see. So many different companies and experiences. Get out and go. You will feel alive and inspired.
