February 2008
On June 28, 2007 the most successful girl band of all time announced their plans to reunite. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Posh, Ginger, Sporty, Scary, and Baby all officially divorced from that very famous 'Spice' name. But the girls are back and something, well... seems 'different'. The days of tacky behaviour and over-the-top fashions have been left in the nineties, and a more mature Spice Girls has been born. The girls are back under the guidance of their once mentor and manager Simon Fuller, and the approach they've taken to their anticipated reunion has been much more civilized.
Because the market is not over-saturating in Spice Girls mayhem like years passed, it has been nice to slowly (and very carefully) re-dabble in the Spice Girls culture. Instantly wanting to judge their music as pop fluff before listening to them again, it came as a bit of a surprise to realize how irresistibly fun their music actually is. At the end of the day the girls music breathes an energy that is quite refreshing. Their music is boisterous, catchy, and completely campy, and it still works. By the look of their ticket sales, people are digging the return of these ladies as well. Ticket sales for the first London date of The Return of the Spice Girls World Tour sold out in 38 seconds, and a total of four shows in February are all sold out at the Air Canada Centre.
The Spice Girls are true power brokers in the world of entertainment with total record sales in the region of 55+ million. One would think their overwhelming success would inflate their egos to unbearable heights. However, it seems with life experiences, the girls have not only accumulated rock hard bodies, but grace and poise as well. It is delightful to see these women humbler and far less abrasive in their approach.
Remember these girls had a history that's as outrageous and shocking as a British soap opera. The world followed along with their tabloid life as they screamed "Girl Power" and met dignitaries like Prince Charles and former South African president Nelson Mandela. There was the abrupt dismissal of Fuller, the sudden dissapearance of Gerri and of course there was when the hottest soccer star and the poshest of the Spice Girls met and became and unstoppable celebrity juggernaut. Even today these women remain tabloid magnets.
But with time, the girls have also become mothers, wives, and most importantly, independent women. All 5 of them have had success following their breakup. The new and improved girls are smarter and fiercer, and with a little help from age are more fabulous than they've ever been. Watching these divas perform their greatest hits is probably the most fun you will have all year. With all the negativity going on in the world, who couldn't afford to spice up their life, even just for one evening.
