Canadian crooning extraordinaire k.d. lang is back. The beloved Grammy and eight time Juno award winner released her eleventh studio album earlier this year, and is embarking on her intimate World Tour this month. Released in February, Watershed is lang's first album of new material in eight years and is titled so to mark a ‘milestone’ in lang's already immensely successful career.
The milestone is one of complete artistic control as lang truly took the reigns on Watershed. She is the producer, writer, singer and multi-instrumentalist for every single song on the album. Laced with a soft and silky tenor and accompanied by strings and guitars, lang is sounding as comfortable as ever with her new creative authority.
On her official website, lang explains that: ";Watershed is like a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch… I didn't feel the need to be genre-specific because this experience felt so wide open” (http://www.kdlang.com). The outcome of lang's freedom is a well constructed mix of original and familiar sounds. It is a record that exudes confidence and maturity.
And although best known for her stunning voice and sexual orientation, k.d. lang is really a determined humanitarian at heart. Look no further then her recent participation in pro-Tibet rallies in Australia for evidence of her work. In addition, lang has been breaking barriers and expanding awareness for years in matters regarding human rights in the LGBT, HIV, and PETA communities.
