In Concert - Artist Profiles

Jann Arden April 2007

As Massey Hall gears up for Jann Arden, Justin Haley takes a look at one of Canada's favorite artists...

Not wanting to waver from her homey roots, Miss Jann Arden is returning to the country's music stores and cozy, intimate spaces this spring. Perfect little vintage theatres, like Toronto's Massey Hall, compliment her quaint band and hysterical comedy interjections, allowing her to deliver haunting, soulful lyrics that will reverberate even through Massey's wooden chairs.

The eight-time Juno winner is back with her ninth album, which consists of hand picked cover songs. Uncover Me is a selection of tracks that have had a defining significance to Arden as an artist. Led by the politically charged single "Bring the Boys Home," which tackles the emotional impact and instabilities of a controversial war, Arden has produced an album that entrances with passion and poignancy. The delicious mix includes some of the best tunes that have braced the music world over the last few decades. Arden has not ignored her loyal fans, who yearn on a yearly basis for new material to sink their teeth into; she has included a new original track "Counterfeit Heart," which is gorgeously sad and fits into the album beautifully.

Arden was a busy, musical girl in 2006, collecting a slew of awards (one celebrating 100,000 spins of her singles on Canadian radio) and receiving a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. Never one to restrict herself, she’s also growing her acting resume, appearing in spots on Corner Gas, a stint in The Vagina Monologues and hosting last year's Just for Laughs Comedy festival. Her latest book, I'll Tell You One Damn Thing, and That's All I Know, is a memoir that shares intimate moments of hilarity, tenderness and sadness.

More importantly, Jann has continued to show commitment as an active supporter to numerous charitable organizations. This year, she stands as the National Spokesperson for Kids Help Phone, is a World Vision supporter, and is part of the Cure Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Arden's refusal to make more cash by filling a hollow hockey arena is something the woman deserves immense praise for. The intimacy of her selected venues shows that she knows what her fans desire—that she understands the emotional impact her strong lyrics have on her diverse following. Quite simply, a night with Arden is as medicating as any therapist session you will experience this year.

Don't miss Jann Arden at Massey Hall April 24 - April 27, 2007.
