For The Love Of Literature...

By: Susan Zuzinjak

For those with a love of the written word, the much anticipated International Festival of Authors (Wednesday October 18 - Saturday October 28, 2006) represents the highlight/pinnacle of the annual literary calendar—in much the same way the film festival attracts those passionate about film. Established in 1980, the IFOA is regarded as one of the world’s pre-eminent writers’ festivals, dedicated to gathering the best writers of contemporary world literature and creating an open forum for writers and readers alike.

Hosted at the Harbourfront Center, the festival offers an impressive schedule of readings, interviews, lectures and round table discussions featuring some of the brightest literary talents from around the world. In addition to public book signings and a festival bookstore, the IFOA also presents a variety of special events including readings by authors short listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, as well as the presentation of the highly anticipated Harbourfront Festival Prize.

A unique addition to this year’s IFOA program will be a special evening dedicated to celebrating the 100th anniversary of McClelland & Stewart. Revered for it’s commitment in promoting Canadian writing, McClelland & Stewart will be honoured on October 18th with special guests Dave Bidini, Karen Kain, Mark Kingwell Alistair McLeod, Anne Michaels and Rohinton Mistry.
