Young People Fucking
Although it does not live up to its audacious title, Young People Fucking, the new Canadian film written and directed by Martin Gero, does offer some stinging one liners and sexual escapades I'm sure we all can relate to on some level.
Structurally, the film's narrative follows five heterosexual couples as they venture into an evening of sexual exploration. Gero chooses the typical character prototypes that we so often find in today's modern culture; from the 'exes' to the 'best friends' to the 'work friends', Gero has them all in his plot.
He also fragments each individual story and intertwines them together under five inter titles that aim to catergorize what you see on screen. From prologue to sex to afterglow Young People Fucking does not miss a beat in examining just how complicated it can be to engage in the act of having sex.
Now although the film is funny and interesting at times, it seems to lack essential ingrediants that are needed for films like this to work. I couldn't seem to find a beating heart throughout much of the film. The absence of true engrossing character development seems to be the largest road black here. By the end, do we really care about these characters?
Furthermore, for such a brawny title, the sex scenes are awfully light and overtly censored compared to the fierce progressiveness of a film like Shortbus. The end however, if you are looking for some good laughs, some fun and if you are a heterosexual between the ages of 18-34, then check out Young People Fucking.
