About The Innovation:
The vibrancy and richness of contemporary Canadian choreography is amply and thrillingly demonstrated in this program of short works by three of the country’s brightest new dancemakers. Encompassing a broad range of styles, imaginative strategies and visions, the three works, by Peter Quanz, Sabrina Matthews and Crystal Pite, are a testament to the recent flowering of choreographic talent throughout Canada and which is making itself felt not just at home, but internationally.
Peter Quanz has choreographed works for American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet, Sacramento Ballet and the Chemnitz Ballet in Germany. American Ballet Theatre’s world premiere of Mr. Quanz’s Kaleidoscope was the company’s only commissioned premiere in 2005. In the same year, the Chemnitz Ballet premiered his first full evening story ballet, Charlies Kreuzfahrt.
Sabrina Matthews studied at Canada’s National Ballet School and danced with Alberta Ballet, where she also began to choreograph under the direction of Mikko Nissinen. She has created works for Alberta Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet, has received both the Peter Dwyer and Clifford E. Lee awards and has had her work toured to both national and international festivals.
Vancouver-based Crystal Pite has created dances for Netherlands Dance Theatre 1, Ballett Frankfurt, Les Ballets jazz de Montreal, Ballet British Columbia and Alberta Ballet. In 2001 she formed her own company, Kidd Pivot, and continues to create and perform in her own work.
