Allan Gardens is a park with a large conservatory located in the center. Locacted in the heart of downtown Toronto, the park is bordered by four major streets: Carlton Street runs along the north side, Gerrard Street the south side, Jarvis Street on the west side and Sherbourne Street on the east. The Toronto Horticultural Society, founded in 1834 was a group of local and traveling members who initiated gardening and botanical projects in the city of Toronto. Their purpose was to grow a variety of plant species from around the world in order to educate the public in horticulture. The City of Toronto, Parks and Recreation Division, has taken on the responsibility of preserving natural environments and horticulture.
A Toronto landmark and a poignant reminder of the area's more gracious age, the domed roof of the Palm House greenhouse at Allan Gardens Conservatory is a much-beloved sight. In all, Allan Gardens comprises 16,000 square feet of greenhouse space, showcasing seasonal, rare and exotic plants.
The conservatory grounds are enlivened by a number of exhibitions throughout the year including the Spring Preview Show, which continues to April and the Easter Display, which begins early April.
Allan Gardens is wheelchair accessible.
