The Gardiner Museum is the only museum in Canada entirely devoted to ceramics. It was founded in 1984 by Toronto philanthropists George and Helen Gardiner to house their outstanding ceramics collection and has often been described as a "jewel box" of ceramic treasures. Situated on the campus of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, across from the Royal Ontario Museum, the Gardiner is one of Toronto's outstanding cultural destinations.
In summer 2006, the Gardiner Museum reopened its doors following a major building renovation and expansion.
The Museum's collection contains more than 2,900 ceramic works from Europe, Asia and the Americas. Highlights include:
One of the world's most noted collections of early European porcelain.
The largest collection of Ancient American ceramics on public display in Canada.
Superb pottery from the Italian Renaissance and 17th–18th-century England.
* The Gardiner Museum Restaurant is open daily for lunch as well as Friday evenings. Reservations are recommended and can be made at: (416) 362-1957.
