Tipping

In Toronto it is customary to leave a tip for most services. Everything from food service to taxi rides. While tipping is for the most part left to the customer’s discretion… It is customary (and expected) to leave anywhere from 15% - 20%.

There is no need to tip in self-service restaurants, or in a coffee shop. You may notice some of these places may have a "Tip Jar" on the counter. It’s not mandatory, but it is definitely a nice gesture to drop in some spare change.

Tipping In A Restaurant
For the most part tipping in a restaurant is the same as elsewhere. You should tip waiters and waitresses around 15%, which is equal to the total amount of tax on your bill, and around 20% for excellent service. However there are a few differences you should know about.

Many restaurants will automatically add a standard gratuity when you are dining with a large group of guests. (usually for groups of six or more) Always make sure to double check your bill there is no need to double tip.

Tipping At Your Hotel
It is customary to tip bellhops, luggage handlers and concierge staff for their assistance. Bellhops, luggage handlers and cloak-room attendants generally receive around $1.00 - $2.00 per item.

Cleaning staff and housekeepers are tipped $2.00 - $5.00 per night.

Tipping In A Bar
If you're out for a night of drinking remember it is also standard to tip in nightclubs and lounges.

A good rule of thumb is bartenders get at least $1.00 per drink and if you are buying a round of drinks you should stick to the standard 15%.

Tipping Your Taxi Driver
Tip taxi drivers about 10% of the fare, rounding up to the nearest dollar.

With anything in the city... Remember. Essentially if you are happy with the service you receive, a 15% - 20% tip on the pre-tax bill is a standard expression of appreciation.
